Filzmoos
Stage 1 of the Volkswagen R Gravelbike Experience starts in Fuschl am See in the Salzkammergut. Across a beautiful, low-traffic valley riders head into Hintersee directly into the mountains of the Osterhorn group. From Hintersee, the longest climb of the day leads over a crisp 5 kilometers and 500 meters ascent up to the saddle. Beautiful alpine meadows and challenging gravel passages accompany us on the way to Tennengau.
After the first descent, we then go through the Lammertal on side roads with little traffic to Annaberg, the birthplace of ski star Marcel Hirscher. After lunch in Annaberg it gets challenging again and two more tough final climbs await the participants.
First up is the Langeggsattel, which is almost 400 meters in ascent and connects Annaberg with the town of Neuberg. From Neuberg there is another 200 meter ascent up towards Kleinberg and then a beautiful descent down to the stage destination in Filzmoos.

St. Michael im Lungau
The second stage of the Volkswagen R Gravelbike Experience is a little shorter but all the more impressive in terms of scenery. From Filzmoos, the route leads up to the winter sports resort of Ramsau. After 500 meters in altitude, the first section is completed and a technical descent down into the Enns Valley follows. After another climb up to Forstau and a fast descent to Radstadt, the route continues at a more leisurely pace for a short time. The route along the Tauern Cycle Path to Untertauern is varied.
Here we follow the route of the Stoneman Tauristas and the ascent to Obertauern has everything that makes gravel hearts beat faster. After a short stretch on the main road, we branch off to the right into a beautiful alpine valley. From here, the route initially follows wide gravel paths past the Gnadenalmen. The paths then become narrower and narrower and we reach the spectacular Johannes waterfall. The route then continues over a short carrying section and varied gravel sections to Obertauern. This is also the highest point of the tour and marks the crossing of the main Alpine ridge.
After a stop for refreshments in Obertauern, the route then descends towards the stage finish in Lungau. A rapid asphalt descent to Tweng is followed by a wonderful gravel section to Mauterndorf, always slightly downhill. From Mauterndorf, the route then follows the flat cycle path to the finish in St. Michael im Lungau.

- Gravel biking on the Ramsau high plateau
- Dachstein view from the Enns Valley
- Alpine flair in Obertauern

Weissensee
A long and exhausting stage awaits the participants on the route from St. Michael to Weissensee. After a flat 10 kilometers in Lungau, the Schönfeldsattel is the challenge of the day. It is a long and steady 12.5-kilometre climb of around 700 meters in altitude to the top of the pass. The pass is pleasant to ride and you can motivate yourself during the ascent with the thought that the next 50 kilometers will be almost exclusively downhill. From the top of the pass, the route descends into the Liesertal valley past Gmünd to Spittal an der Drau.
From Spittal an der Drau, the route then follows the Drau cycle path to Greifenburg. From here, the last ascent of the day starts up to the Döbelberg. With 350 meters of elevation gain and an average gradient of 6%, this is a very pleasant ride. Once at the top, the route is flat along the western shore of Lake Weissensee to the finish of this year’s VW R Gravelbike Experience.
Highlights
- Beautiful alpine meadows at the top of the Schönfeldsattel pass
- Rapid descent through the Liesertal valley
- Arrival at the beautiful Weissensee
